Immediately following, at approximately 11 a.m., the town will commemorate General George Washington’s historic visit to Wallingford on June 29, 1775, with a live re-enactment. Sponsored by the Wallingford Historical Society, the Wallingford Historic Preservation Trust, and the Wallingford Public Celebrations Committee, this event will begin at Town Hall and proceed through town in a ceremonial procession.

The 2nd Company Governor’s Foot Guard will provide an authentic military escort for General Washington, just as it did 250 years ago. Joining the procession will be members of the Susan Carrington Clarke Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The historical procession will follow a route with several notable stops. The first will be at 350 Center Street, the original site of Jeremiah Carrington’s Tavern. From there, the entourage will continue east on Center Street before turning left onto North Elm Street, proceeding to the Atwater Cottage at the intersection of Christian Street and North Elm Street. This stop commemorates General Washington’s visit to the original Atwater Store, where he is believed to have acquired gunpowder. The procession will then head west along Christian Street, turn right onto North Main Street, and conclude at its final destination—the Nehemiah Royce House, located at 538 North Main Street.

All are welcome to attend these free, family-friendly events and take part in honoring Wallingford’s rich contributions to American history.

In accordance with Chapter 216 of the Wallingford Town Code, the following road closures will be in effect to accommodate the ceremonies and procession:

Road Closures:
