School Custodians Get New Contract

Higher wages come with higher insurance costs for the district's custodians.

The Wallingford school district's custodians will see raises over the next three years, albeit small ones — less than 2 percent each year.

The Wallingford Board of Education recently approved the contract increased payments toward health insurance and co-payments, school officials said.

The raises the custodians will receive range from 1.9 percent in the first year, 1.75 percent in the second year and 1.95 percent in the third year.

Some of the terms of the new contract only apply to new hirees, who will be able to convert less unused sick days into cash payments. Existing employees can cash out as many as 90 days while new employees can use half that number.

The contract, which covers about 45 employees, won't go into effect until it is approved by the Town Council.
