More Stores Closing at Waterford’s Crystal Mall Amid Declining Tenants

Crystal Mall in Waterford sees more store closures, including Forever 21 and FYE, as the property faces uncertainty.

WATERFORD, CT — More shops are closing at the Crystal Mall in Waterford after two retailers and a bounce house closed there recently.

Forever 21 is closing at least three of its six Connecticut stores. The Crystal Mall location will close "whenever we sell out" of sale inventory, a staffer said.

Other locations in Manchester and Milford are also expected to close, and a Mashantucket store could be on the chopping block too.

FYE is nearing the end of its liquidation sale at the Crystal Mall and is expected to close in the coming months, an employee said. Everything in the store will be at least 40% off as of Thursday.

The chain, originally known as For Your Entertainment, has Meriden, Waterbury, and Danbury locations all expected to close this year. Only its Trumbull store will be left once Waterford closes.

T-Mobile closed its location in the mall Jan. 19, a store employee said. T-Mobile is now located in the nearby Waterford Commons.

Dollar N Things appears to have closed its discount store on the mall's first level. The store is listed as permanently closed on Google, and a call to the store was not answered Wednesday.

Other recent closures at the mall include Ice Imports, Bounce World, and Zales Jewelry.

The mall is also showing signs of neglect, as the escalators and elevators are not functioning, according to CT Scoop.

The news comes as the Crystal Mall has shed tenants in recent years. The last remaining anchor store, JCPenney, closed last year.

The mall was sold at auction last year along with the former Sears anchor store space.

Namdar Realty Group, which owns the mall, has said the property could be redeveloped.

A mall representative did not immediately return a request for comment for this story.

Located at 850 Hartford Turnpike in Waterford, the mall was built in 1984 with additional construction in 1987. The two-story, 535,494-square-foot building sits on 82 acres.
