'Possible Pipe Bomb' Shuts Down Route 85 in Waterford
Route 85 has since been reopened and the metal cylindrical pipe investigated by police.

A motorist driving along Route 85, in the area of the I-395 and Industrial Drive intersection, contacted Connecticut State Police to report a possible pipe bomb on the side of the road. State Police contacted the Waterford Police Department, who responded to the scene at approximately 1:32 p.m. Wednesday, March 30.
According to Waterford Police, they located a metal cylindrical pipe, capped at both ends.
"As a precaution Route 85 was closed to all traffic," police said. "The Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit was requested and responded to the scene. The item was secured, and rendered safe by members of ESU."
'Not a Pipe Bomb'
"Upon examination it was determined it was not a pipe bomb, no type of explosive was located, and there was no threat to the public from the item," Waterford Police reported. "A green leafy substance, possibly marijuana, was located inside."
Route 85 was reopened at 2:56 p.m.
