Hall and Conard Make Another List of America's Best Schools

Newsweek ranks Hall at No. 629 and Conard at No. 720 out of 2,000 high schools.

Both West Hartford public high schools have been included in Newsweek's recently released list of America's Best High Schools.

Hall came in at No. 629 of the 2,000 ranked schools, the 13th-highest ranking in Connecticut. Conard was No. 720, in 16th place.

Other area schools that ranked in the top 1,000 were Connecticut IB Academy in East Hartford, 112; Farmington High School, 405; Glastonbury, 456; South Windsor High School, 742; and Canton High School, 817.

U.S. News & World Report's rankings, released last month, have Conard in the No. 2 spot and Hall as No. 8 in Connecticut, with both ranked in the top 500 nationally.

In a Washington Post ranking of the nation's most challenging high schools, also released last month, Conard and Hall were two of only three schools in Connecticut to make the top 400.

Each organization uses different criteria to determine a school's ranking.

Newsweek ranks only the schools already considered to be the "top public high schools in the nation – those that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads.

The ranking is based on six components: graduation rate (25 percent), college acceptance rate (25 percent), AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10 percent), and percent of students enrolled in at least one AP/IB/AICE course (5 percent).
