Let There Be Light: West Hartford Aims To Improve Night Visibility

The Town of West Hartford is embarking on a large upgrade of the town's street light system to improve nighttime visibility and safety.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Things are looking brighter in West Hartford these days ... literally.

That's because the town has embarked on a streetlight improvement campaign this summer to ensure there is sufficient light to keep motorists and pedestrians safe, part of West Hartford's ongoing "Vision Zero' initiative.

"Proper lighting in areas of pedestrian crossings is a Federal Highway Administration-proven safety countermeasure and has been found to reduce nighttime pedestrian crashes by up to 42 percent," wrote the town in an announcement.

Streetlighting is anticipated to be improved on many corridors in 2025.

Recently, improvements were made at Albany Avenue near Mohegan Drive, Farmington Avenue between Trout Brook Drive and Whiting Lane, and Oakwood Avenue between Caya Avenue and Flatbush Avenue.
