Memorial Day In West Hartford: Town Releases Parade Details

This year marks the American Legion Post 96th's 100th anniversary, which the town will celebrate along with its typical Memorial Day events.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — This year marks the American Legion Post 96's 100th anniversary, which the town of West Hartford will celebrate along with its typical Memorial Day festivities on Monday.

The annual Memorial Day Parade will return once again this year, and it will begin at 10 a.m. (with parade units assembling starting at 9:30 a.m.). The parade will kick off on Farmington Avenue at the intersection of Woodrow Street, and it will end at Town Hall.

This year, its Grand Marshal will be Lt. Gen. Edward D. Banta, a former West Hartford resident who graduated from Conard High School in 1982.

Right after the parade (at around 11 a.m.), the town will host a short ceremony at the Veterans Memorial. Banta will be the keynote speaker, and the ceremony will also include color guards from the West Hartford Police and Fire Departments and American Legion Post 96.

Parking will be free all day at all municipal parking sites on Memorial Day (though fees will still apply in the parking garages).

The town will implement parking bans along the parade route starting at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, and they will be lifted after the parade (at around 11 a.m.).

Parking will be banned on:

  • Pleasant Street, west side, from Whitman to Farmington Avenue
  • Farmington Avenue, both sides, from Walden to Raymond
  • Main Street, both sides, from Brace to Burr

Most municipal buildings will be closed on Monday, and the library will be closed on Sunday as well. Trash will pick-up in town will be delayed as well — Monday's collection will be completed on Tuesday, and trash pick-up on each remaining day will be one day later than normal.

"West Hartford takes great pride in hosting its annual Memorial Day Parade," town officials said in a news release. "It follows a tradition established by returning West Hartford veterans from World War I in the 1920s."
