Once-Embattled West Hartford Affordable Housing Project Seeks Applicants
Those interested in moving into the complex, which is in a former synagogue in West Hartford, have until early January to apply.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Back in 2023, when the developers of a new affordable housing complex first went to the Town of West Hartford, they were far from welcomed by the public.
But, ultimately, the developers of "The Elle at North Main" were approved to transform the former Agudas Achim Synagogue at 1244 N. Main St., West Hartford, into much-needed affordable housing in town.
Two years after garnering necessary town approvals and about 11 months after breaking ground, "The Elle at North Main" is now looking for folks to live there.

"The Elle at North Main" is now accepting pre-applications for one of the 49 new housing units.
Back in 2023, the proposal caused significant angst among many residents, who flooded a West Hartford Town Council meeting regarding a necessary rezone application for the project.

In November 2023, Trout Brook Realty Advisors Inc. went before the council and, in a lengthy public hearing, listened as many residents denounced the project.
According to public testimony at the time, folks were fearful of traffic and the social impacts of a new apartment complex and lower-income folks living there.
But council members along bipartisan lines emotionally supported additional affordable housing in town, something seen as critical if West Hartford aims to be a community for all.
That led to where "The Elle" is now.
According to the town, "The Elle at North Main" is accepting pre-applications for apartments located at 1244 North Main St.
Interested applicants must apply by Jan. 5, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. The application process actually started Nov. 1.
Those who apply late, however, needn't worry as their chances of being chosen are the same as the first ones.
That's because The Elle at North Main will use a random-draw lottery system to determine the waiting list order from all applications.
Management will begin reaching out to applicants via telephone and/or email for application pre-screening beginning in January or February 2026.
Applicants may apply by:
• Submitting a pre-application online at www.ElleNorthMain.com.
• Requesting an appointment if assistance is needed to complete the pre-application at The Elle management offices. Folks are asked not to visit the property or management office without an appointment.
Eligibility for these units is subject to household minimum and maximum income limits, and other eligibility criteria under the federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) and DOH HOME/FLEX Programs.
Those with a disability who require a reasonable accommodation should call 860-734-7844 or email help@whhousing.org.
