Staying Safe In West Hartford Without Sidewalks
The rules of pedestrian safety are clear when it comes to sidewalks, but what about when no sidewalks are available?

WEST HARTFORD, CT — The town's Vision Zero safety push has covered a plethora of scenarios on how folks can stay safe while strolling through town.
And, now, the Town of West Hartford has some guidelines for those walking around town roads without the benefit of sidewalks.
"Pedestrians should always use sidewalks when available," wrote the town recently in an announcement. "However, some spots lack proper sidewalks."

It doesn't mean those roads should be avoided, but it does mean extra steps must be taken to ensure safe steps.
For example:

• If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible.
• Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. Look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right.
• If a crosswalk or intersection is not available, locate a well-lit area with the best view of the traffic. •
• Wait for a gap in traffic that allows enough time to cross safely and continue watching for traffic as you cross.
