WEST HARTFORD, CT — The polls have now closed as West Hartford residents cast their votes for several key municipal positions in town.

Despite that, the West Hartford Democratic Town Committee declared victory and continued 6-3 control of the West Hartford Town Council at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday.

"While we still await the final numbers, the result is clear," wrote the Dems. "West Hartford voters continue to trust Democratic leadership."

According to the Democrats, incumbents Shari Cantor, Ben Wenograd, Deb Polun, Barry Walters, and Tiffani McGinnis were re-elected to the town council and joined by Democratic newcomer Lisa Lazarus.

With six Democrats elected, it means three Republicans will still sit on the council, with those names not yet announced.

Earlier in the evening, West Hartford Democrats said they had elected five to the council, omitting Walters' name. Later in the night, however, Democrats reissued a statement declaring that Walters was re-elected.

For the West Hartford Board of Education, voters chose Jason Gagnon, Jennifer Herz, and Jonathan Weiner, Democrats reported.

“Even as the national conversation continues to be shaped by the divisive and dangerous rhetoric of Donald Trump and his allies, West Hartford voters have sent a clear message: we choose a different path,” said West Hartford Democratic Town Committee Chairman Peter Andrews.

“By electing Democratic leaders committed to inclusion, integrity, and progress, our residents have shown that strong, responsible local government is the best defense against the threats facing our democracy at every level.”

“Tonight, our community made it clear they want to keep building on the progress we’ve achieved together,” said West Hartford Democratic Vice Chair Megan Wallett. “West Hartford’s strength comes from leaders who listen, collaborate, and never lose sight of what matters for our families and neighborhoods. There’s a lot to be proud of in this community, and we look forward to what comes next.”

The three Republicans elected to the West Hartford Town Council, according to the Connecticut Secretary of the State's Office, were: John Lyons, Gayle Harris, and Sijie Jason Wang.

Incumbent Republican Alberto Cortes was ousted from the council.
