West Hartford Food Scraps Program Participants Have Some Work To Do
The town announced some additional measures that have to be taken to regain access to food scrap bins following a recent app update.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — The town's public works department issued a special bulletin to folks participating in the town's food scrap program.
Folks participating in West Hartford's food scrap program, where such scraps are collected via special bins for community composting uses, recently had to update their app that grants them access to special bins in town.
But, the town said Thursday, there are other steps necessary to avoid an error message.

"The MetroKey app developers added enhancements to their app. Many residents were prompted to install updates sometime in the last 24 hours and did so," wrote the town.
"What we have now learned is that if you have installed the updates, to open the bins, you must sign out and then back in to your MetroKey app.

"Simply swiping the app off your phone screen does not sign you out. You'll need to log out of the app account. If you don’t do this, you will arrive at the bin and get the error message, 'Report a Problem,'" wrote officials.
In addition, food scrap participants must ensure Bluetooth is on to access the bins.
"Thank you all for your enthusiastic participation in this program, which has made it such a resounding success. We appreciate your patience as the program has grown quickly and adjustments have been needed," wrote the town.
New bins are expected to be in place by the end of January, and locations will be posted on the town’s website on the Food Scraps tab under Public Works.
