West Hartford Resident Sworn In As Connecticut's U.S. Attorney

A Connecticut native, she will lead the office that enforces federal criminal laws and represents the federal government in civil cases.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A West Hartford resident has been sworn in as the 54th U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut, the office has announced.

Vanessa Roberts Avery, 47, was sworn in on Monday in New Haven by Chief U.S. District Judge Stefan R. Underhill. President Joe Biden nominated her for the position on Jan. 26, and the United States Senate confirmed her nomination on April 27.

Avery is a New Haven native who graduated from New Haven Public Schools before attending Yale University and the Georgetown University Law Center. She has worked as a trial attorney, a litigation attorney and an assistant U.S. Attorney.

Since January 2019, Avery has led litigation and investigations on behalf of the state of Connecticut in cases concerning antitrust, opioids, government program fraud, consumer protection, child protection, environment, energy, finance, privacy and cybersecurity, and civil rights.

"It is an honor to return to this office, in the city where I was raised, to serve as Connecticut's U.S. Attorney," Avery said in a statement. "I look forward to working with the many talented members of this office, as well as our dedicated law enforcement partners, to enforce federal criminal and civil laws, protect our communities, and ensure justice for all who live in our state."

As U.S. Attorney, Avery leads a staff of roughly 68 Assistant U.S. Attorneys and around 57 staff members at offices in New Haven, Hartford and Bridgeport.
