Speeding Driver Arrested After Running From Crash On I-95 In West Haven: State PD

Police said the man was driving more than 100 mph before crashing and running away from the scene on I-95 in West Haven.

WEST HAVEN, CT — A West Haven man was arrested after police said he was driving more than 100 mph before crashing and running away from the scene on I-95 in West Haven on Wednesday morning.

State troopers responded around 6:30 a.m. on March 5 to the area of Exit 43 on I-95 South on the report of a two-vehicle crash, according to Connecticut State Police.

Police said multiple callers reported that a man wearing a gray sweatshirt and gray pants got out of one vehicle and began running away from the scene.

The callers also said the man got out from the driver’s seat, and that the vehicle had been traveling erratically at speeds more than 100 mph prior to the collision, according to police.

Police said the occupant of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

An investigation found that the driver who left the scene was 21-year-old Matthew Perez of West Haven, according to police.

Troopers met with Perez at his residence, where police said he admitted to being involved in the accident and leaving the scene.

Police said Perez was arrested without incident, and troopers found that he did not possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle.

Perez was charged with evading responsibility, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle without a license, and reckless use of highway by a pedestrian. He was released after posting a $2,000 bond with a court date of April 1.
