Late-Night Solicitors Targeted In New Ordinance In West Haven

Late-night solicitors can now be fined $250 per incident in West Haven, thanks to a recently approved city ordinance.

WEST HAVEN, CT — Late-night solicitors can now be fined $250 per incident in West Haven thanks to a recently approved city ordinance.

Mayor Dorinda Borer told NBC Connecticut that she requested the ordinance after receiving several complaints from residents, including an 80-year-old man with cancer, regarding late-night solicitors.

One resident shared a Ring doorbell camera video showing a solicitor showing up on their doorstep at 10 p.m., according to NBC Connecticut.

Borer wrote in a post on Facebook that under the new rules, businesses “will have to register with the police department, they can't have more than 5 solicitors in the City, need background checks, WH ID badges, can't knock after dusk and can’t go to a home more than once in 6 months.”

“Violators will be fined $250 per incident,” Borer wrote. “With regs now on the books if you report an incident we can now address it. Before we had no teeth to the rules.”
