The man was caught illegally dumping a "significant" amount of bulk items and garbage in West Haven, according to police.

WEST HAVEN, CT — A man has been cited in connection with illegally dumping a “significant” amount of items in West Haven, according to police.

Police said a significant amount of bulk items and garbage have been illegally dumped on the side of the road on Spring Street in West Haven.

A West Haven officer was patrolling the Spring Street area around 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 when he saw a Ford Econoline van parked on the side of the road with its lights off and the rear doors open, according to police.

Police said a man was outside the van and appeared to be “actively discarding large items near the waterway.”

The area is known as a common location for illegal dumping, according to police.

Police said the officer contacted the driver, who admitted to dumping large pieces of furniture and other items along the roadway.

The man was issued a citation for $770 for “littering in a waterway/public land area and will be responsible for additional fees associated with the removal of the garbage he dumped,” according to police.

“Great job by our officer for his attentiveness and proactive patrol in addressing this ongoing issue,” police wrote in a post on Facebook. “We all know that illegal dumping negatively impacts our community and environment, and we encourage residents to report any suspicious activity or illegal dumping to the West Haven Police Department.”
