Driver Goes Through Red Light, Strikes Moped Operator: West Haven Police

A moped operator was hospitalized after being struck by the driver of a minivan who was trying to turn left at a red light, police said.

WEST HAVEN, CT — A moped / scooter operator was seriously injured after being struck by a minivan Tuesday evening in West Haven, according to police.

Police responded around 5 p.m. on Oct. 21 to Forest Road and Derby Avenue on the report of a crash, according to Sgt. Scott Allard.

Allard said an investigation found that the operator of the moped/ scooter was traveling eastbound on Derby Avenue.

“As he entered the intersection of Forest Road and Derby Avenue, he was struck by a minivan traveling westbound on Derby Avenue,” Allard wrote in a news release. “The operator of the minivan attempted to turn left onto Forest Road against a red light and struck the moped/scooter.”

The crash caused the operator of the moped/scooter to be ejected and landed onto the road by the curb, according to Allard.

Allard said a passerby who witnessed the crash stopped and rendered CPR on the injured rider before the West Haven Fire Department’s arrival.

The moped / scooter rider was taken to an area hospital with serious head injuries, according to Allard.

The driver of the minivan stayed at the scene, Allard said.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
