Obituary: Bertrand “Bert” Charles Doerr Jr., 81, of West Haven

Bert was a proud U.S. Marine, dedicated bartender at Randall's for over 50 years and devoted member of many community organizations.

WEST HAVEN, CT - (From West Haven Funeral Home) Bertrand “Bert” Charles Doerr Jr., age 81, of West Haven, passed away on February 28, 2022. He was the loving husband of the late Patricia “Patty” Smith Doerr.

Bert was born in New Haven, on August 1, 1940, son of the late Bertrand and Helen Kelleher Doerr. He is survived by his sister Jane Doerr Nemit and her husband Jeffrey, his brother-in-law Tim Smith and his wife Elaine, his nieces, Beth Montaufray, Susan Keeling, Katie Dillon, and Kellie Smith, his nephews, Jeffrey Nemit Jr., Philip Dillon Jr., Joseph Nemit, and Steven Dillon, many great-nieces and great-nephews and his brother-in-law Philip Dillon.

The family appreciates Lois Dioro for her friendship and support.

Bert was predeceased by his sister Betty Ann Doerr Dillon, aunts Elizabeth “Betty” Kelleher and Ann Taylor.

Bert proudly served our nation in the U.S. Marine Corp. He later became a well-known bartender at Randall’s for over 50 years.

He was a member of the West Haven Irish-American Club, American Legion, and a lifetime member of the West Haven Elks. On Sundays you could always find Bert watching football or baseball.

He was an avid Yale University football and Red Sox fan. St Patrick’s Day was a “national holiday” for Bert; he was Irishman of the Year and served as the Grand Marshall for the St Patrick’s Day Parade.

He also enjoyed golfing and spending time in Florida with family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Saturday March 26th, from 10am – 12noon, to celebrate Bert’s and Patty’s lives, at the West Haven Funeral Home, 662 Savin Ave.

The family has asked that masks be worn. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bert’s name to Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
