Westies on Wheels Seeks School Supply Donations for Youths

The Westies on Wheels bus—an initiative bringing West Haven Public Schools staff directly to students to ensure they’re prepared for classes this fall—is seeking donations of school supplies for August neighborhood visits.

Organizers are currently asking for scissors, markers, colored pencils, rulers and folders and any other supplies or monetary donations people would be willing to contribute.

Then, on Aug. 15, school staff members volunteering with the program will make stops in various areas across the city to deliver the back-to-school essentials to students as well as information on district programs and community resources to parents and guardians. Tentative WoW stops include Spring Heights, Meadow Landing, the Savin Rock Conference Center and St. Paul’s Church.

The outreach effort began in 2015 as a way to help West Haven students, especially those in need, get ready for the first day of school (which is Aug. 29) and to make a direct connection with school families who may have questions on academic programs, special education or new student registration.

“Visiting West Haven neighborhoods with the Westies on Wheels school bus gives us a great opportunity to celebrate the new academic year with our students and their families and offer them the resources they may need to have a positive experience in school,” Deninger said.

“A colorful folder or pencils with a fun design may not seem like a big deal, but for a child whose family can’t afford supplies, it can really make a difference. We hope all of our students can arrive on the first day feeling confident and excited,” Kozlowski added.

The WoW bus will also be offering hygiene items, free bike helmets, face-painting, games and other activities. Backpacks will be given out while supplies last, and a child must be present to receive one.
