Woman Charged In Hit & Run That Killed West Haven Man, 23: PD

NEW HAVEN, CT — A 41-year-old woman was arrested and charged Nov. 18 by New Haven police in the fatal, 2023 hit-and-run car versus scooter crash that claimed the life of graduate student Priyanshu Agwal, 23.

It was just after 11 p.m. on Oct. 18, 2023 when Agwal, a University of New Haven student living then in West Haven, was struck at the intersection of Whalley Avenue and Amity Road, police said at the time.

The "evading vehicle" was traveling west through the intersection of Whalley Avenue at Amity Road, as Agwal was traveling east on Whalley when they collided at the intersection and the driver fled the scene, police said. Agwal, found unresponsive in the roadway, was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital, but died from his injuries eight days later, on Oct. 26.

Now, After an extensive investigation, an arrest warrant was secured for Jill Augelli, 41, of Naugatuck, charging her with evading responsibility resulting in death and the bond was set for $250,000. According to state court and corrections records, Augelli has not posted bond and is currently being heldat the Janet S. York Correctional Institution for women in East Lyme.

According to her LinkedIn, Augelli, "earned a Connecticut license in Accident and Health or Sickness/Life Insurance."

Monday morning, New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker, New Haven police Chief Karl Jacobson, police command staff and members of Agwal’s family held a press conference on the investigation and arrest of Augelli.

Elicker said Agwal's family noted his "big smile" and heart, the latter donated to save another life.

"We offer our deepest condolences to his family," the mayor said.

Aqwal's brother Aman said he wished the driver now charged had "stopped" to make sure his bother was alright.

"I miss my brother every day," he said. Picturing him "on his scooter up in the sky," he reiterated: "I miss him. I miss him every day."
