Adults' Spelling Skills to 'Bee' Put to the Test

Children's spelling bees are contests so popular that championships are televised on ESPN. This Sunday, Friends of the Weston Public Library will put adult's spelling to the test.

The Inaugural Adult Spelling Bee will be held in the library community room at 5:30 p.m.

"Our Friends group came up with the idea for the spelling bee," said Karen Tatarka, director of the Weston Public Library. "It should be a lot of fun."

As of Wednesday afternoon, six people had signed up. Tatarka said people can still sign up by email and in person, adding walk-ins will be accepted on the night of the event. It's free to compete and there are no restrictions based on residency.

The library is located at 56 Norfield Road and the email address is westonlibrary@westonct.gov.

The flier touts "buzz worthy prizes" for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Tatarka said bee-themed prizes will include things like locally produced honey from Red Bee Honey, honey teas and bee's wax candles.

Those who cannot find a babysitter may bring their children. "Kids are welcome," Tatarka said. "There will be coloring sheets, word finds and other activities."

The library will have snacks for children and adults attending the event.

Catherine Revzon, a member of the Friends of Weston Public Library, came up with the idea for the spelling bee, according to Tatarka.

"All the Friends are fantastic," Tatarka said. "We're very lucky to have them. They really support our programming. We couldn't have any programming without them."
