Easton's new $593,000 animal control facility at 385 Morehouse Road passed its final inspection Monday and Police Chief James Candee says his animal control officer, Kelly Fitch, should be able to start moving in soon.
First Selectman Thomas Herrmann said the town's building inspector had already given the shelter a certificate of occupancy and the Connecticut Department of Agriculture performed an inspection Monday morning to ensure the building was habitable for animals.
"I'm thrilled beyond words," Herrmann said after hearing that it passed later that morning. "I hope it puts the old barking to rest and brings in new barking."
The first selectman was alluding the grumblings in town throughout the process, which he said took about seven years.
Herrmann said he believes the older shelter has a brown pit bull named Max living there right now. Candee said there are also a few stray cats.
Candee said the animal shelter was an existing project he wanted to get done since taking over as chief last year.
"It's a beautiful place," he said, adding moving into the new building will be gradual.
