Updated: 11:56 a.m.:

Traffic on I-95 northbound at Exit 3 appears to have returned to normal following an early morning multi-truck crash that killed at least one person.

The highway was closed for about four hours by Greenwich firefighters who had to contend with debris scattered across the road following the crash involving two tractor-trailers and a light-duty truck, officials said.

Connecticut State Police are still investigating and are not able to release any information, according to a spokesman.
Greenwich Patch will provide updates as information becomes available.

Updated: 8:34 a.m.:

The overnight fatal crash involved two tractor-trailers and one light-duty truck, according to Greenwich Deputy Fire Chief Tom Nixon.

Greenwich firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 2:52 a.m., Nixon said. "The road was closed for a good four hours. It was unsafe due to the debris on the roadway past (northbound) Exit 2," Nixon said.

Connecticut State Police, who are investigating the crash, reopened the highway about 8 a.m. However, the northbound Exit 3 off ramp remains closed, officials said.

Nixon said one of the trucks was carrying "foodstuffs, consumables."

Local roads remain jammed with motorists seeking to avoid the highway. Traffic delays on I-95 reportedly continue with traffic backed up into Mamaroneck, NY.

Updated: 8:10 a.m.:
The northbound travel lanes of I-95 have been reopened to traffic, according to WCBS-880. However, the northbound exit 3 ramp remains closed as Connecticut State Police continue their investigation into a fatal tractor-trailer crash involving several other vehicles.

Original story:

An overnight fatal tractor trailer crash on the northbound Exit 3 ramp in Greenwich has closed the exit to all traffic, according to Greenwich Police.

Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said that only one northbound lane is open to traffic in the area. He said that the exit ramp will remain closed "for a significant portion of the morning" as Connecticut State Police continue their investigation.

Because of the closure, Gray said there is "a heavy traffic condition on local, adjacent roads" causing delays throughout Greenwich. "We have officers posted at key locations" to assist with traffic control, Gray said.

He said motorists should expect long delays in the area.

According to WCBS-880 traffic reports, northbound traffic on I-95 is backed up to Exit 18A in Mamaroneck, NY.

Greenwich Patch will have more details as they become available.
