Wilton author's fly fishing book details numerous spots to cast lines in Fairfield County.

With Opening Day of fishing season on Saturday, April 21, many local anglers will be heading to the stream to try their luck.
There are over 20 trout streams in Fairfield County, and no shortage of fishing options for the angler willing to explore their backyard. For many, however, finding places to go fishing and access to the water can be a challenge.
Recently released, Fly Fishing Fairfield County: Secrets of Suburban Streams by local author, fly fishing guide and conservationist Jeff Yates unlocks the secrets of the region’s rivers.

For residents, the book covers all the local trout fishing options on the Mill River and other nearby streams. For Weston residents, the book covers all the local trout fishing options on the mainstem and west branch of the Saugatuck River and other nearby streams.

A fourth generation Wilton resident, Yates has been fishing the rivers of Fairfield County for nearly all of his 30 years, including his first trout, caught with his mom’s help on the Norwalk River in Wilton when he was three years old.
A dedicated conservationist, passionate about protecting local waters, Yates is president of the Mianus Chapter of Trout Unlimited, represents Connecticut on Trout Unlimited’s National Leadership Council, and is a founding board member of the Friends of Mianus River Park.
Yates earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from Kenyon College in Ohio and began his writing career as a reporter at The Wilton Bulletin newspaper. He became editor in 2006. In 2008, Yates became communications manager at the Fairfield County Community Foundation, a Norwalk-based nonprofit helping connect donors to causes they care about and identifying and addressing critical regional needs.
