Letter: 'Easton Village Store Contamination'

"Five violations of wetlands contamination have been identified by the Easton Conservation Commission…"

To the editor:

A couple of years ago the Easton Village Store (EVS) was proposed to be a go-to destination for an expensive sidewalk that Easton P&Z and First Selectman Bindelglass were promoting to enable Helen Keller Middle School kids to walk to the store to buy ice cream after school. Ultimately this sidewalk construction attempt failed and, given the current state of the EVS, this was very fortunate because contamination has been discovered on the property. Thus begins a saga of inaction and mystery.

Five violations of wetlands contamination have been identified by the Easton Conservation Commission (see their Feb. 14 meeting minutes).

So far all attempts to hold the alleged perpetrators of this contamination to account have been ignored. How is it that a commercial business like EVS gets to ignore our regulations and laws? Why has our Board of Selectmen not taken action on this serious problem?

Everybody has to be held accountable to the same laws, particularly commercial businesses in a commercial district. These are health and safety violations. Our First Selectman is a medical doctor. For that reason alone, these violations should be of particular concern to Dr. Bindelglass and the other selectmen and they need to act.
