Letter: Redding DTC Chair On Roe V. Wade Supreme Court Draft Opinion

"The draft opinion makes it clear that marriage equality, contraception, and LGBTQ+ rights are also at risk..."

Dear Voters,

The U.S. Supreme Court appears poised to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which has offered federal protection of abortion rights for the past 50 years.

Overturning the Roe decision would not only cause immediate harm to the people who need abortion care. The draft opinion makes it clear that marriage equality, contraception, and LGBTQ+ rights are also at risk.

Connecticut residents will continue to have access to safe and legal abortion. Connecticut codified abortion rights in 1990, and those rights will stand if Roe v. Wade is overturned. Additionally, the Connecticut House and Senate recently passed The Reproductive Freedom Defense Act (HB-5414), which expands access to abortion, and provides protections for medical providers and people across the country who come here to access the abortion care they need. Our State Representative Anne Hughes, and Senator Will Haskell, cosponsored this landmark bill which Governor Lamont has promised to sign into law.

We have these protections here in Connecticut thanks to our Democrat-controlled legislature and our Democratic Governor. But these protections will not always be guaranteed to us. Connecticut is not as heavily Democratic as some may think, and we are always in danger of losing control of our majority.

This November, Connecticut voters will decide who will make the decisions in our country, in our state, and in our towns, that will affect our everyday lives.

Please help elect Democrats up and down the ballot this November. Contact us at ReddingDems@gmail.com to learn about volunteer opportunities.
