REDDING, CT — The Mark Twain Library will dedicate its 53rd Annual Art Show to the late artist Jimmy Grashow, whose decades-long support of the institution helped shape the annual exhibition. This year’s show runs Dec. 6–14 and will feature original works by more than 175 artists.

The juried exhibition, considered a holiday-season tradition in Redding, includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and mixed-media pieces available for viewing and purchase. Organizers said the event remains a significant fundraiser for the library.

"For over six decades, James Grashow’s wildly inventive, provocative works have graced dozens of distinguished museums and galleries, iconic album covers, and preeminent publications," Art Show Chair Meghan Huszagh said. "It is with both pride and gratitude that we honor his legacy and dedicate this year’s event to him and his breathtaking ability to manifest pure wonder through art."

Grashow, an award-winning illustrator known for his cardboard sculptures, wood engravings and album cover art — including Jethro Tull’s “Stand Up” — moved to Redding in the 1970s and contributed to the exhibit every year until his death in September. His signature “monkeys” serve as this year’s thematic backdrop.

Exhibition Co-Chair Katherine Baumgartner said visitors can expect a wide range of mediums and subject matter. “We’re confident that visitors will be impressed by the exceptional quality and diversity of the art on display,” she said. Co-Chair Melinda Shea added that the region’s creative community continues to be central to the show’s success.

Stamford-based art advisor and dealer Lily de Jongh Downing served as Juror of Selection, determining which works were included. Artist Tricia Wright will serve as Juror of Awards, selecting standout pieces.

In addition to wall-displayed artwork, many participating artists will offer portfolio pieces, which organizers say make popular holiday gifts. The library retains a 35 percent commission on sold work. The show will also be available online Dec. 6–14, and the library will host several art-related programs during the exhibition week.
