Muller: A Selectman Must Stand Above His Party

To the Editor:

I have learned several important lessons in my two years as selectman.

First, I recognize that my most important constituency is my three children, who hopefully understand that public service is the most significant responsibility one can undertake for one’s community.

Second, I have learned that a selectman must stand above his or her Party, and occasionally personal beliefs, to interpret the Town Charter and state laws in the best interests of all Weston residents. 

Third, I understand there are several constituencies that I represent, not all of whom attend meetings or engage in town activities. This includes seniors, families with children, singles and the children themselves. It is crucial to consider how I can best serve their interests.

Fourth, I remind myself that I sit on a Board of Selectmen, not a Board of Ombudsmen. My role and powers are described, and in some cases limited, by the Town Charter and state statutes, and I cannot make decisions, or solve all problems, if that decision would contravene these regulations.

Fifth and perhaps most important to the voters, I understand that my decisions must be totally transparent. I explain the rationale for each vote, leaving no doubt as to the thought process that went into my decision. Gayle and I have made it our primary objective to ensure openness and transparency in governing Weston, and we will continue to do so. I hope to be re-elected to another term as Selectman, to continue my service for another two years.
