Obituary: Elizabeth 'Betty' Burnley Anderson, 99

Betty enjoyed cooking and baking, and no one could make a better apple pie or strawberry-rhubarb pie than her.

WESTON, CT — Elizabeth “Betty” Burnley Anderson, of Seekonk, MA and Fairfield, the beloved wife of the late Harold Anderson, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday. She was born in Seekonk to the late Edwin and Ruth (Edwards) Burnley. After marrying, she moved with her husband to Westport, where they raised their four children. They returned to Seekonk, MA to retire until 2 years ago when Betty moved to Fairfield, CT to be closer to her family living in the area.

Betty graduated from East Providence High School where she met her future husband, Harold. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. She provided a loving household for her husband and four children, also working as an aide in both the Westport and Bristol County, RI school systems.

She never lost her zest for design and crafting becoming a talented quilter with the Swansea Quilt Guild, a watercolor painter, basket-weaver and knitter, just to name a few. She meticulously hand-stitched every quilt and tirelessly wove each basket and loved to give a quilt or basket to each family member and her many friends. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and no one could make a better apple pie or strawberry-rhubarb pie than her. Betty also fulfilled her long life by volunteering with the Earnest Workers at her beloved Seekonk Congregational Church of which she was a lifelong member. She enjoyed visits from family, traveling, playing tennis, growing plants, bird watching and giving special attention to her many family pets over the years.

Betty is survived by her loving children, Peter Anderson and his wife, Kathleen, Carol Anderson and her husband, Arthur Lungo, Bruce Anderson and his wife, Yvonne Fournier, Scott Anderson (deceased) and his wife, Jenny Anderson. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Erin Marullo and her husband Joseph, Erik Anderson, Ethan Anderson, Christopher Lungo, Dana Anderson and her husband Joseph Costa, Nicholas Anderson, Zachary Lungo and Owen Anderson; as well as her great-grandchildren, Lucia Marullo and Henry Costa. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Scott Anderson and sister, Eleanor Clegg.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Seekonk Congregational Church Memorial Room, 600 Fall River Ave. in Seekonk, MA. Following the viewing, Betty will be interred in Lakeside-Carpenter Cemetery, 150 Newman Ave. in East Providence, RI. After the burial, a church service will be held back at the church, beginning at 12 noon, followed by collation and a light lunch.
