Redding, Easton, Region 9 Budgets Pass Easily

Despite a low turnout, Redding and Easton residents on Tuesday approved their respective town and school budgets—as well as the budget for Joel Barlow High School—for the 2012-2013 year.

Despite relatively low turnout, Redding and Easton voters approved both their respective town budgets as well as the budget proposed by the Region 9 Board of Education for 's 2012-2013 school year.

Redding voters, voting at the community center, voted in support of the town budget, which also includes funds to operate Redding Elementary School and John Read Middle School, by a margin of 717 (61.4 percent) to 451 (38.6 percent), according to Town Clerk Michele Grande.

Redding also approved the Region 9 budget by a vote of 721 (61.7 percent) to 448 (38.3 percent). Easton approved the Region 9 budget by a vote of 627 (70 percent) to 272 (30 percent), according to Grande.

Easton voters, voting at Samuel Staples Elementary School, voiced their approval of the town budget, which also includes the budgets for the elementary school and Helen Keller Middle School, Grande said. The margin was 646 (72.1 percent) in favor to 254 (27.9 percent) against.

Redding total budget: $46,741,814, a 2.13 percent increase.

  • Town: $13,198,263, a 0.26 percent increase. 
  • Redding Schools: $21,635,551, a 1.32 percent increase.
  • Joel Barlow: $11,908,000, a 5.8 percent increase.

Easton total budget: $40,678,346, a 1.06 percent decrease.

  • Town: $15,319,647, a decrease of 2.44 percent.
  • Easton Schools: $15,243,331, an increase of 1.88 percent.
  • Joel Barlow: $10,115,368, a 3.19 percent decrease.

The total Joel Barlow High School , a 1.49 percent increase from the current budget. Because of shifts in enrollment, Redding's portion has increased while Easton's has decreased.
