We Walk Because They Walk

The following is a press release written by Tess Maggio

Students from Westport and have been collaborating to plan the April 29 CROP Hunger Walk. CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) is one of the oldest charity walks in the nation and was reintroduced to the area two years ago as a youth-led event. The Westport/Weston CROP Hunger Walk is the only CROP Hunger Walk in the nation that is led by youth.

The CROP Hunger Walk is a symbolic walk; however, for many around the world, walking is a daily means for survival. They walk for food, they walk for shelter, they walk to work, to school, and to find refuge. Funds that are raised on April 29 will not only provide emergency food supplies, but will also provide needed resources to help produce better harvests and to construct infrastructure for accessible clean water. Twenty-five percent of the money that is raised will stay in our area to help fight hunger.

Registration for the April 29 Walk begins at 1 p.m. at Christ and Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane in Westport. The 3.5-mile walk will begin at 2 p.m. All are invited to join us on April 29, truly making this a community effort.
