Weston, Barlow High School Students Earn Major Scholarships

The seniors at Weston and Joel Barlow High Schools earned a National Merit Scholarship Wednesday.

WESTON, CT — Students from Weston High School and Joel Barlow High School have just scored major national scholarships.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced Wednesday more than 2,900 winners of National Merit Scholarships, which are financed by U.S. colleges and universities.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.

These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

Among the winners is Weston High School senior Emmet Arees, who plans to study bioinformatics at the University of Southern California.

Redding resident and Joel Barlow senior Virginia Gray was another winner. She is undecided about her major at Tulane University, according to NMSC.

An additional group of Scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2024 competition to more than 3,600.
