The program will highlight the experiences of slaves, including Millie Tunnell, who served George Washington, and Onesimus, an African man enslaved by Puritan preacher Cotton Mather. Mills will also share the story of Victoria Earle Matthews, an enslaved woman who later became a celebrated writer and leader.
Carl Ballenas, Maple Grove Cemetery Historian, stated that Mills' poems "travel from the plantations of the South to historic cemeteries of Queens," and unearth "slavery’s erasures with lyrical power." Mills' recent books, "Unhired Hands" and "How the Earth Answers," both focus on slavery in the North.
