WESTON-REDDING-EASTON, CT— Moms do so much for everyone around them. We try to celebrate them all year long, but Mother's Day is a perfect opportunity to shout it from the rooftops and post it on Patch: Mom rocks!
Here at Patch we've launched an initiative to help recognize the awesome moms and mom figures in communities like yours.
This submission comes from Lee Nicoloro who nominated Kathleen Heller of Weston-Redding-Easton.
What makes your Mom extra special?
In her 50’s, my mother adopted 5 kids from China — three as teens. One is blind in one eye and one is deaf. She created a law in our state for the children. She is a fierce advocate for our rights, particularly in the school system. She brought OHR (Federal government) in and sued the school system because they wouldn't provide ESL and won. She's been a volunteer EMT with the local fire department for 14 years.
She works hard to find opportunities for adventures and to create new opportunities for us. We have seen her kick down doors when necessary. With my mother, we have rescued and fostered animals for 15 years. She's "retired" now, though she has a hard time saying "no."
She's courageous, supportive, kind and amazing. Here is what a brother wrote:
Qualities:
Unconditional love: embraces our strengths and weaknesses, loves us wholeheartedly
Selfless: puts our needs above her own, sacrifices her own desires and personal time, prioritizes happiness and well-being of others
Strength and resilience: faces challenges head-on and overcomes obstacles for our sake
Encouragement and support: encourages our dreams and aspirations, gives logistical support and celebrates our achievements
Patience and forgiveness: forgives mistakes and doesn’t give up on us
What she has done:
Made sure we have interesting and educational experiences
Helped us to understand responsibility
Taught us life skills (important considerations when moving, managing bills, cooking, cleaning, laundry)
I think you get the picture.
Why do you feel your Mom deserves the spotlight?
Because she never feels that she deserves any recognition for anything she has done.
Happy Mother's Day to Kathleen Heller, and thank you for all you do!
