WESTPORT, CT — Westport police on Thursday arrested two men accused of robbing an armored car driver at gunpoint outside a Post Road East bank and then leading officers on a high-speed pursuit, according to the Westport Police Department.

The incident occurred at about 12:33 p.m. at the Wells Fargo branch at 422 Post Road East, when two masked suspects dressed in black approached an armored car driver after he retrieved a cash deposit from inside the bank, police said. One suspect allegedly pointed what the victim described as a revolver-style weapon, while the other forced him to the ground and took a deposit bag, his service firearm, keys, phone and a scanner.

A witness leaving the bank saw the struggle and yelled for help, police said. The suspects dropped the bank bag and the victim’s phone but fled with the driver’s firearm, keys and scanner. The witness told officers the suspects drove toward him, in what appeared to be an attempt at striking the witness, before leaving the parking lot.

Responding officers began searching the area and spotted the suspect vehicle traveling at a high speed on Compo Road South, according to police. The suspect driving allegedly ignored attempts to pull over and continued onto Greens Farms Road and Hillspoint Road, at times outpacing officers.
Police deployed stop sticks near Greens Farms Road, puncturing the vehicle’s tires and slowing it down. Officers brought the car to a stop east of the Hales Road overpass and took the two suspects into custody — one who attempted to flee on foot and another who remained inside the vehicle.

Police said the stolen items and a weapon were not found in the car.

Officers and evidence-recovery dogs retraced the vehicle’s route and found the armored car driver’s stolen handgun on Hillspoint Road near Hales Road, along with his keys nearby. The scanner was recovered on Compo Road South near the Baron’s property. The weapon allegedly used in the robbery has not been found.

"At this time the suspect’s weapon used in the commission of this crime has not been located but is believed to have been discarded in the Hillspoint/CompoBeach/Compo Road South area," said Westport Police Lt. Anthony Prezioso in a statement. "This weapon was reported by one of the suspects to be a facsimile firearm, however that has not been definitively confirmed by the investigation. At the time of this writing, continuing efforts are being made to locate and recover this evidence, but area residents are cautioned that it may eventually be located on private property. Officers will continue to maintain a heavy presence in these neighborhoods through the night and into the daylight hours in an effort to recover this piece of evidence. We ask that if you should encounter this item that you please do not attempt to handle it and contact the Westport Police Department immediately so that it can be properly and safely collected and removed."
