Coleytown Middle School Presents 'Matilda The Musical' In Early April

WESTPORT, CT — Coleytown Company, the stage production group at Coleytown Middle School, has announced that its annual spring production for 2025 will be Matilda The Musical, inspired by the beloved novel by Roald Dahl. The production, with a cast comprised entirely of students from 6th through 8th grade, will have a four-performance run from April 4th through April 6th. Complete with colorful characters, rousing songs, and an inspiring storyline, this special show is certain to warm the hearts of audiences of all ages - especially elementary school aged children who will find the story both relatable and magical.

Matilda The Musical brings to life the engaging story of an extraordinary young girl, Matilda Wormwood, whose brilliant imagination fueled by her love of reading and sharp wit combine to change her own destiny. An invitation to attend a new school opens up both opportunities and challenges as new friendships are forged, obstacles are tackled, and a spirit of rebellion is unleashed. Enter through the doors of Crunchem Hall Primary School where a shimmer of miracles and a touch of love will prove that, “Somewhere inside all of us is the power to change the world.”

Adding to the allure of this show is its long-awaited debut in Westport. Originally set to open during the spring of 2020, the show was abruptly halted due to the pandemic. Coleytown Company Director Ben Frimmer reflects, “Perhaps it’s about our new team of incredible professionals working side-by-side with the students on everything from music & choreography to set design & costumes. Perhaps it’s the amazing talent & commitment I witness each day as the performers rehearse tirelessly. But the genuine excitement and anticipation for this show is unmatched. We are really proud of what we are creating together and can’t wait to share it with the community.”

While Matilda the Musical has been a box-office favorite for many years – both on Broadway and in London’s West End- the Coleytown Company production will also be a completely re-imagined version of the show. Audiences will delight in a refreshingly new stage design, brought to life with the professional expertise of Westport Country Playhouse’s very own “Master Carpenter” who is working alongside a dedicated student Tech Crew comprised of 7th and 8th graders. The Tech Crew presents an unparalleled learning opportunity that spans set building, painting, prop creation and costumes. The Playhouse relationship also afforded the students a private field trip to the Playhouse to see first-hand how a professional theater operates.
