Deadline Approaches To Apply For CT Campaign Training Boot Camp

The Campaign School at Yale taught Westport First Selectwoman Jen Tooker, who is running for governor, about winning elections.

News release from The Campaign School at Yale:

NEW HAVEN, CT — Jen Tooker, Westport First Selectwoman and newly declared candidate for Connecticut governor, learned to win elections at The Campaign School at Yale in 2015. Now she is encouraging women of all parties and independents to apply to the non-partisan, issue-neutral school’s 5-day Summer Session election boot camp June 9-13 at Yale Law School. The application closes at midnight on Monday, April 21.

“TCSYale’s Summer Session is the most immersive campaign training you can get. It mimics the intensity of a real political campaign,” Tooker said. “You’ll end up exhausted, but so much more prepared to serve your constituency, which is what elected positions are all about.”

TCSYale’s Summer Session is open to all genders, though the school’s mission is to achieve parity for women in politics. This is especially poignant since women lost 5 seats in the Connecticut state legislature in November.

“Women are underrepresented in elected office, which means issues important to them are less represented,” said Patti Russo, executive director of TCSYale. “Yet, in general, women of all parties are better suited to lead. They are less ego-driven, more collaborative, and more motivated by the idea of helping to improve the lives of those they serve. At TCSYale we teach them how to deal with barriers such as misogyny, less access to funds, and even threats of violence as they learn to win elections.”

Just 28.2 percent of the U.S. Congress identifies as female and women hold just 30.6 percent of state elected offices.[i]Internationally, just 25 countries have women as heads of state, according to the United Nations. At the current rate, it will take 134 years to reach gender parity, according to the World Economic Forum.[ii]
