WESTPORT, CT — A 40-year-old Stratford man was charged with driving under the influence and failure to drive in the proper lane this week, after Westport police said the man nearly crashed his van into a police cruiser.
The incident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Monday on the Post Road East near Roseville Road, as an officer was traveling westbound on the Post Road East while on routine patrol.
"The officer observed a white van traveling eastbound cross over the double yellow lines and continue into his lane, causing the officer to brake, honk, and swerve to the right to avoid a collision," wrote Lt. Eric Woods in a statement.

Edison Landon was driving the van, according to police, and the officer hung a U turn and pulled him over.
"While speaking with Mr. Landon, the officer immediately smelled the odor of alcohol and observed that the operator was slurring his words," Woods said. "Mr. Landon was asked to submit to Standardized Field Sobriety Test, with which he complied and subsequently failed to perform."
