DWW Hosts 'Raising Children in Trump's America' Panel

The panel will aim to discuss how to address emerging situations in the community and how to discuss them with children.

From DWW: The Democratic Women of Westport (DWW) today announced that it is hosting a panel entitled “Raising Children in Trump's America.” The discussion will explore how to address the needs emerging in our community as a result of the new political landscape, including recent executive actions and political directives. Panelists will discuss how to talk to children about the political climate in a way that is authentic and not fear- based, and how to use kindness an act of resistance. The forum, which is being co-sponsored by the Westport Democratic Committee (DTC), will take place on Tuesday, April 25th from 7:30pm to 9:30 at Branson Hall, Christ and Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane in Westport.

Panelists for the forum include Claudia Connor, president and CEO of the International Institute of Connecticut; Marji Lipshez-Shapiro Interim Director of the Anti Defamation League; Connecticut, Claire Dinshaw, Editor in Chief of Inklings; Tara Covais Varsov a psychotherapist working with children and families; and Karen Dahl of little m, a communications firm. The discussion will be moderated by Rob Simmelkjaer, Senior Vice President and On-air Contributor at NBC Sports, who is an active member of the Westport Democratic Committee and member of the Zoning Board of Appeals.

“We are thrilled to host such an esteemed panel and look forward to a lively discussion about how the current administration and political climate directly impact Westport’s children and families. We want to provide practical ways in which we as parents and community members can help foster a more kind and positive climate,” said Rebecca Martin, co-chair of the DWW.

  • The social impact of Trump’s rhetoric on our schools and community.
  • How we can talk to our children in a way that is not fear-based but authentic.
  • How we can engender kindness as an act of resistance.
