Former Westport Police Chief Alfred R. Fiore Dies

Fiore served as chief from 2004 to 2010. He was 69.

WESTPORT, CT — Former Westport Police Chief Alfred R. Fiore III passed away Saturday morning at the age of 69, the department announced.

Fiore, a Shelton native who was a long-time Westport resident, served as Chief from 2004 to 2010; he joined the department in 1978. During his career, he was promoted to Detective, Sergeant, Inspector and Deputy Chief, before becoming Chief, succeeding Chief William Chiarenzelli.

He became interested in law enforcement while playing high school football, because some of his coaches were police officers, according to the department.

"This budding intrigue in their jobs ultimately led [Chief Fiore] to pursue an education in the field," officials wrote in a statement. "He would then go on to graduate from the University of New Haven with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. He would also later attend and graduate from Session 153 of the Federal Bureau of Investigations’ National Academy for Law Enforcement Leaders in 1988."

Fiore's retirement in 2010 was on paper; he served as Chief for another year on a contractual basis to help prepare the department's next group of leaders. He was succeeded as Chief in 2011 by Dale E. Call.
