Police stopped a man in Westport last week for a motor vehicle violation and found hallucinogenic mushrooms and marijuana in his car.

Joshua DeMarco, 19, of Brewster Street in Bridgeport, reportedly told police that he eats the mushrooms in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

According to the arrest report, an officer stopped DeMarco for a motor vehicle violation and detected an odor of burnt marijuana in the car while speaking with the driver. A check of DeMarco's name showed several prior arrests for possession of less than a half ounce of marijuana, police said.

The officer asked DeMarco if there was marijuana in the car. He showed the officer a penny-sized amount of marijuana and said that was it, but a search of the hatchback of the vehicle revealed a blue backpack containing marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms, police said.

DeMarco was transported to Westport Police Headquarters, where he was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of hallucinogens. He was released after posting a $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Norwalk Superior Court on May 30.

Officers asked DeMarco how dry the mushrooms were when he ate them, to which he reportedly replied that he eats them with peanut butter and jelly.
