Hot Sauce: A Love Story

Photo: Abby Yates peddles "Hoardable Hot Sauce" -- which she produces with her husband, Jens Tschebull-- at the Westport Farmers Market.

You could say that Abby Yates and Jens Tschebull have the hots(auce) for each other.

The love story of thus Stamford couple -- regulars at the Westport Farmers Market -- began with hot sauce.

They grew up just a quarter of a mile from each other in Darien, but Tschebull is a year older than Yates and so they never met during their school days.

It wasn't until a few years ago that their relationship kindled.

Yates said she and Tschebull were getting to know each other when she learned he grew peppers and bottled hot sauce for friends.

Yates too grew and pickled peppers -- and so they decided to combine forces.

"I realized I could take his recipes, buy the ingredients at a farmers market, and sell back the hot sauce at market," Yates said.

And so "Hoardable Hot Sauce," popular at the Westport Farmers Market, was born.

The two have been making and selling the locally grown sauce -- which comes in flavors like Lemon Thyme, Red Pepper Mix, Green Pepper Mix, and Cruel and Unusual Punishment -- since 2010.

They've been married for just over a year.

Visit the couple and sample the sauce at Westport Farmers Market -- every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until November at 50 Imperial Avenue.
