The homeowner called 911 to report the fire on Christmas night, according to officials.

WESTPORT, CT — Crews extinguished a basement fire at a home in Westport on Christmas night, according to fire officials.

A homeowner called 911 around 9:30 p.m. to report a fire in the basement of their home on Horseshoe Lane in Westport, according to Assistant Fire Chief Brett Kirby.

“All occupants of the home had exited safely prior to the arrival of the first Fire Department units,” Kirby wrote in a news release. “Engine 4 arrived first and entered the home, encountering light smoke on the first floor. They entered the basement and were met with thick smoke throughout. They located the fire area and completed extinguishment of the fire which was confined to a small area in the basement.”

Kirby said firefighters searched the building, checked for any extension from the fire location and started ventilation to “clear the house of smoke and carbon monoxide.”

“The Westport Fire Department would like to remind everyone to have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their homes,” Kirby wrote. “Also, be sure to have a meeting place outside your home that all occupants know about so that firefighters can be sure all occupants have exited the building safely.”
