Lightning Strikes Twice During Monday's Thunderstorm In Westport: FD

The two separate lightning strikes occurred in residential neighborhoods.

WESTPORT, CT — A lightning strike damaged a home Monday night in Westport, one of two lightning strikes in residential neighborhoods during the fast-moving thunderstorm, according to fire officials. No injuries were reported.

One strike hit the home on Joanne Circle, igniting a second-floor structure fire.

"Fire crews arrived swiftly and successfully contained the fire to the room of origin before it could spread further," said Westport Fire Marshal Terry Dunn in a statement.

The second incident occurred on Bayberry Lane, where lightning struck a residential electric pet containment system, or invisible fence, which resulted in a surge caused electrical damage and posed a risk to the property.

"These incidents serve as a strong reminder that summer storms can be dangerous, and things can go wrong quickly," Dunn said. "Electric pet fences are especially vulnerable because they’re wired underground and usually connected to your home’s electrical system. If lightning strikes nearby, it can travel through that wiring, damage your home, and potentially start a fire. It takes just a few seconds to unplug the system when a storm is on the way—and it’s a smart precaution."

Additionally, fire officials urge residents to take the following precautions during thunderstorms:

  • Unplug electric pet containment systems to prevent fire or equipment damage.
  • Use surge protectors for important electronics and unplug non-essential devices.
  • Avoid using wired appliances or electronics during an active storm.
  • Stay indoors and away from windows when thunder or lightning is present.

"Westport had a fast and coordinated response in both cases, which helped prevent more serious damage," Dunn said. "Thankfully, no one was hurt—but this is exactly why early preparation matters. We’re asking residents to stay weather-aware and take simple steps to stay safe."
