Man Broke Into Westport Home, Stole $50,000 Worth Of Jewelry, Designer Handbags, Police Say

The accused was charged on a warrant and police said DNA helped them solve the case.

WESTPORT, CT — Police say DNA helped them solve a 30-month-old burglary.

At 12:02 a.m. on January 8, 2023, police responded to a Westport residence on a report of a burglary.

The homeowners said they had returned from an afternoon and evening out of town to find that their home had been forcibly entered, presumably through a first-floor window that had been broken by the suspect(s), police said.

Multiple rooms had been searched through by the perpetrators, police said. Further investigation revealed that items from the home including jewelry and designer handbags had been stolen, with a total loss due to theft estimated to be over $50,000, police said.

Responding officers noted blood droplets at the scene near the initial point of entry, as well as on other items that had presumably been handled by the suspect(s) while searching the home, police said.

A presumptive CODIS DNA database match was found from blood samples preserved from the crime scene and later processed by the state’s forensic lab, police said. An arrest warrant was sought and granted for Diego Hernandez-Corba, 30, of Queens, NY, police said.

He is charged on a warrant with third-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, conspiracy to commit second-degree criminal mischief, first-degree larceny, and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny.

His bond was set at $30,000.
