New Fairfield Girls Lacrosse Reclaims State Title

The Rebels took a competitive game away from a 12th-seeded Weston team.

STRATFORD, CT — For the fourth time in a row, the New Fairfield Rebels came out on top of the girls lacrosse pack, beating the Weston Trojans 11-8 in the CIAC Class S final match Saturday at Bunnell High School.

“The girls did what they had to do,” coach Greg Schwarz said, noting their play in the second half—which saw the team scoring five unanswered goals starting in the first minute—made all the difference.

Schwarz also took note of Margaret Morgan’s performance, in particular her making eight key saves throughout the intense game.

“I think our goalie played phenomenally,” he said.

New Fairfield, which finished the regular season with a 12-2 record, went right at the Trojans, scoring two goals in the first few minutes.

Weston came right back, however, and made it a competitive game going into the half just behind the Rebels in a 5-4 score.

“Overall I think our girls played well, (but) they’re a great team,” admitted Weston coach Megan Borman.

It had appeared to be a year of rebuilding for the Trojans, who because of last year’s non-season, saw only a couple of experienced varsity players in 2021.

“We’ve had to build from the ground up, but overall it was a great year,” Borman said.

Weston’s last state championship was in 2013, and it now holds a 2-2 record for state title games.

New Fairfield, which beat Stonington to come to the finals, now has a 5-0 record in title games.
