The early morning crash on Monday temporarily shut down the southbound lanes on the Merritt Parkway for several hours.
WESTPORT, CT — Connecticut State Police are investigating a fatal crash on the Merritt Parkway southbound in Westport, that killed a 50-year-old New Haven man.
Salvatore Castelan-Flores was killed in the 4:15 a.m. crash, after he had gotten out of his Chrysler Pacifica near exit 21. According to state police, Castelan-Flores had crashed into the wooden guardrail off the left lane and had gotten out of his vehicle to check on the damage, as the vehicle became disabled perpendicular to the thruway.
A Nissan Pathfinder driven by a 41-year-old Seymour man was traveling southbound in the left lane at the time, and upon seeing the Pacifica in the roadway, he "attempted to make an evasive maneuver to the right." But Castelan-Flores also jumped in the same direction and was struck by the Pathfinder, according to a preliminary investigation by state police.
