Obituary: Maria Teresa Sacouto, 81, Of Westport

WESTPORT, CT — (From Harding Funeral Home): Maria Teresa Sales Ludovice de Gusmão Sá Couto, of Westport, CT, passed away in the early morning hours of Dec. 31, 2023 at the age of 81. Teresa passed away after a fierce, prolonged struggle with various health challenges.

Teresa was born on February 27, 1942 in Lisbon, Portugal, where she grew up and married Mário Luis Neves Sá Couto on November 24, 1962. With extraordinary courage and resilience, Teresa made a home with her family on four different continents, having lived in Lisbon, Portugal; Bissau, Guinea; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Westport, CT.

She took great joy in, and was deeply dedicated to, raising her children and tending to her grandchildren.

Teresa is survived by her husband, Mário; her children, Inês Ludovice de Gusmão SáCouto Curwen and her husband William, Susana Ludovice de Gusmão SáCouto and her partner Manuella, and Nuno Pedro Ludovice de Gusmão SáCouto and his wife Carrie; sister, Maria Isabel Sales Ludovice de Gusmão; grandchildren, Tomas Patrick, Maia Amelia, Daniel Kelly, Madeleine Eve and Max Leo; and extended family in Portugal.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Teresa will be held at St. Luke Church, 49 Turkey Hill Road North in Westport, CT, on Friday, Jan. 5 at 12 noon. The family will be in the Church Gathering Space after the service for those who wish to pay their respects.
