Despite his many successes, Tom remained humble. And in fact, if ever asked what he did, he
would talk about a young man on death row whom he advocated for. To him, that was one of
the most meaningful experiences of his life. Tom always took a keen interest in other people’s
lives. He was highly social and well-loved in many circles.
Tom continually sought out life’s wonderful adventures. He scuba dove around the world,
climbed many mountains from the Dolomites to the Andes and even rode wild mustangs in
Wyoming. He was also always very athletic as an adult, playing tennis, cycling, skiing, hiking and
recently had taken up boxing to counter the effects of Parkinson’s Disease.
He is survived by his wife and partner of 27 years, Susan Farewell of Deep River, Connecticut;
his daughter, Justine Seligson of London, England; his sister Dr. Jane Sillman and her husband,
Dr. Fred Sillman of Cambridge, Massachusetts; his twin brother Dr. Robert Seligson of
Manhattan, New York; his nephew Eric Sillman and his wife Dr. Rebecca Johansson Locke of
Brookline, Massachusetts and their children; his niece, Kathy Sillman and her husband Ray
Lewis of Newton, Massachusetts and their children plus generations of friends and colleagues.
Details for a celebration of Tom’s life will be confirmed at a later date.
