Home Connected to Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward up for Sale

CORRECTION: The Paul Newman-Joanne Woodward home isn't for sale; it's the house she bought for her mother.

Correction: This article originally contained incorrect information. The (larger) house at 277 North Ave. was never owned by Joanne Woodward or the late Paul Newman, her husband; the smaller house at 275 North Ave. was owned by Woodward, said the listing agent, Realtor Mary Palmieri Gai.

When Joanne Woodward and her husband, Paul Newman, both lived in Westport, Joanne Woodward bought a historic former mill where her mother came to live, according to Realtor Mary Palmieri Gai.

The Westport estate where Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward lived for decades and entertained visitors such as Sir Laurence Olivier is up for sale: two houses, a barn, 10.46 acres — all for $9,898,000.

Or you could buy either of the houses individually — the asking price for one is 7,499,000; for the other, $2,399,000, according to an article in the Westport News.

The kitchen where Newman himself cooked up dishes that became the foundation of Newman’s Own company is presumably in at least one of these houses.

The list of celebrities who visited the place is (we’re guessing) pretty long. And a river (the Aspetuck River) runs through it.

And, yes, of course there’s a swimming pool (in-ground, heated, gunnite). This is Hollywood — err, that is, Westport — we’re talking about. The pool comes with the larger house at 277 North Ave. in Westport.

That house, according to its Web page on Zillow.com, has 6,442 square feet of interior space and sits on 7.34 acres. It comes with a “large guest house” and 200-year-old barn, according to Zillow.

Other features of this property, according to the Westport News: “355 feet of river frontage, wine cellar and tasting room, patio, porch, two pergolas, wood-shingle roof, first-floor master bedroom, five working fireplaces, wide-plank chestnut floors, exposed beams, original woodwork.”

The Westport News reports that the house has a long history well before Newman and Woodward ever bought it. The house was originally built and owned by the Coley family for generations. Coleytown was a village in Westport with its own mill — now the other house from the original estate.

That house, at 275 North Ave., is (according to Zillow.com) a “3.12-acre riverfront compound, complete with waterfall and footbridge, includes a building site and two historic, move in condition residences that will remain. The property straddles the trout-stocked river with the two residences on the south side on about an acre, and on the north side of the river, there is a 2 acre building site with approvals for a five-bedroom house and pool. A footbridge connects the property.”

Between the Coley family and the Newman family, various parts of the estate had been the home of artists in Westport’s arts colony of the early 20th century, according to the Westport News.

Of course there’s a video of 277 North Ave. and another one of 275 North Ave., this is Hollywood — err, Westport.
