Police Issue Scam Warning In Westport

"Westport Police want to remind residents about the nearly daily attempt of scam artists trying to victimize our residents."

WESTPORT, CT — Online, telephone and in-person scams are on the rise throughout the country, and Westport police are offering tips on how to avoid following victim to such illegal activity.

"Westport Police want to remind residents about the nearly daily attempt of scam artists trying to victimize our residents," Capt. Eric Woods wrote in a statement. "Recently, in a neighboring Town, an elderly person fell victim to withdrawing a large sum of money and gave it to the 'Agent' who showed up at their house."

Below are some simple tips residents should follow prior to giving large sums of money to strangers:

  • Do not send/give any money or gift cards to an unknown person.
  • Make contact with family who claim to be in danger prior to sending money, if the scam involves a claim about a family member
  • Trust your banking representatives if they try to intervene.
  • Call the police if you feel that you are being scammed
